Vallabh Government College, Mandi was established way back in 1948 and happened to be the first Government College in the hilly area. This college is named after Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, who was the first Home Minister in the Government of India after independence and known as ‘An Iron Man of India’. The college is located in the Eastern side of Mandi town. This Town is gateway to the Himalayas and to the different tourist places, like Kullu and Manali.

Its surrounding are beautiful, calm and quiet with big lush green playgrounds. The total area is about 08 acres. The Mandi Town, which is bowl shaped, gives its panoramic view when seen from the college campus, with river Beas flowing on its side. It is an important district and a major centre of education in the State of Himachal Pradesh.

Presently, it is affiliated to the Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla since year 1971, prior to which, it was affiliated to the Panjab University, Chandigarh. It is recognised by the UGC under 2(f) and 12B since February 1977. It is an urban Government funded college. It is also running two self-financing courses. The unit cost of education in this college is Rs. 5185/- per annum. The motto of the college is ‘shastre shastre cha kaushlam’, which means that practice alone leads to learning.
Vallabh Government College, Mandi volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council by submitting their self-study report. National Assessment and Accreditation Council constituted an expert committee to visit the college and validate its self-study report. The Peer Team comprises Prof. H.S. Soch, former Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Punjab, as Chairperson, and Prof. C. Manoharachary, Dean, Faculty of Science, Osmania University, Hyderabad and Prof. Anil Rao, Principal, Moolji Jaitha College, Jalgaon, Maharashtra, as members. The team visited the institution for three days, i.e. from 18th to 20th April, 2004. The Peer Team carefully perused and analyzed the self-study report submitted by the institution. During institution visit, Peer Team went through the relevant documents, visited the departments and interacted with the various constituents of the institution. The academic, co-curricular, extra-curricular, sports and other facilities of the institution were visited. The Peer Team also interacted at length with the Principal, faculties, students, non-teaching staff, parents and alumni of the institution. Based on the above exercise and keeping in mind the criteria identified by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, the Peer Team has taken up the assessment and accreditation of the college.
